POSITION: Collection and Distribution Technician (Utilities Division)

JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, this position performs the day to day duties associated with the repair and upgrade of water distribution and wastewater collection systems, customer service issues, and housekeeping at water and wastewater facilities, which includes facility and ground maintenance as needed. Has a working knowledge of required procedures, equipment and operating standards, and can resolve routine problems. Uses hand and power tools, and operates small to medium sized equipment.


  1. Repairs and maintains City water and sewer lines in compliance with established procedures and standards, Federal and State laws, and administrative regulations;
  2. Install water and sewer taps;
  3. Assists with inspection and/or monitoring of pumps, charts, gauges, and meters daily;
  4. Loads and unloads items such as stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, pipe, timber and heavy mechanical equipment;
  5. Assists with collection of water and waste water samples and conducting lab tests; adjusts chemicals and/or equipment as necessary;
  6. Assists with preparation and maintenance of accurate reports/records;
  7. Assists with maintaining adequate inventory of spare parts, chemicals, equipment, and tools;
  8. Assists in semi-skilled work by handling tools, carrying or lifting lumber, mixing or placing cement and asphalt concrete, performing simple repairs or running errands;
  9. Assists in the installation of storm drain pipes and construction of catch basins;
  10. Collects and disposes of debris, trash, etc. caused by job;
  11. Maintains and repairs equipment;
  12. Assists with maintenance and cleaning of water and waste water plant and grounds;
  13. May fix or replace water meters;
  14. Maintain and manage the overall success of the city’s FOG (Fats, Oils, Grease) Program to include proper training, customer contact, issuing citations, and constant compliance; and
  15. Performs other related work as assigned.


  1. High School Diploma (or GED equivalent);
  2. Valid Georgia Restricted Commercial License Class (B) driver’s license (or attainment within six months of hire);
  3. Valid Georgia Collection & Distribution Operator License (or attainment of certification within 18 months of hire);
  4. Must possess and maintain (or obtain within six months of hire) a valid Flagging certificate;
  5. Valid Georgia FOG certification (or attainment or certification within six months of hire);
  6. Ability to lift 50 pounds;
  7. Must successfully pass criminal background and Motor Vehicle/DOT checks;
  8. Must be 18 years of age or older; and
  9. Must successfully pass post-offer drug screening and pre-employment physical.

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM (40-hour work week) plus rotating on-call and after-hours and weekend call-ins for core Public Works duties, as needed.
