POSITION: Maintenance Operator I (Streets Division)

JOB SUMMARY: Performs manual labor relating to construction, maintenance and repair of city streets/roads, drainage systems, right-of-way, public buildings, tree-trimming and removal, parking lots, parks, grounds areas, or other area of assignment. This position will also be responsible for operation of small equipment, maintenance of equipment fleet, small construction projects, bulk sanitation pickup, and emergency response activities, and other duties as assigned.


  1. Shovel and rake asphalt; maintain, service, and make minor repairs to equipment; perform rough masonry and cement work; perform basic carpentry, plumbing, and painting;
  2. Mow and maintain city rights-of-way and grounds; clean storm drains; patch, seal cracks, and perform other maintenance to streets and roads; remove graffiti from city buildings;
  3. Operate licensed vehicles, including light trucks; operate a variety of hand and power tools, machines, and light equipment; work with signs and painting of street legends;
  4. Assist water and sanitary sewer divisions in performing maintenance and mainline cleaning;
  5. Observe and maintain established safety policies and procedures and take appropriate precautions to preserve their own safety and others while performing daily tasks;
  6. Operate vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner; and perform related duties and responsibilities, as required; and
  7. Perform other related work as assigned.


  1. High School Diploma (or GED equivalent);
  2. Must have a minimum of one year of experience in public works construction or street maintenance, including duties in any one or more of the following areas: streets, concrete, traffic control, or water and sanitary sewer maintenance;
  3. Must possess a current, valid Georgia Class C or higher Driver’s License with a good driver’s history;
  4. Must possess and maintain (or obtain within six months of hire) a valid Flagging certificate;
  5. Must successfully pass criminal background and motor vehicle record checks;
  6. Must be 18 years of age or older; and
  7. Must successfully pass post-offer drug screening and pre-employment physical.

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM (40-hour work week) plus rotating on-call and after-hours and weekend call-ins for core Public Works duties, as needed.
